Since graduating from university in the summer of 2009 I have found it extremely difficult to secure full-time employment in my field of study. Since graduating I have been working tirelessly on my design and presentational skills and techniques. As each month passed I was aware of the growing gap my CV was forming. After a handful of interviews and discussions I decided it was time to ‘bite the bullet’ and seek employment outside of my field of studies of which I dedicated four years of hard work and generated the dreaded student debt.

After weeks of a broader search I was again faced with disappointment, either I was over-qualified, under-qualified or I was lacking in experience. Knowing I required experience I took the plunge and accepted a job in a call centre, not my first choice of employment however the experience I would gain and the skills I would develop are better than none at all.

The experiences I have endured have been interesting to say the least. I initially believed that any creativity or ‘flare’ I once possessed would be stifled however to my surprise it has only increased my passion for design and all things creative. It would seem this mind numbingly boring tedious work I have been subjected to has opened Pandora’s box, I now think differently and challenge things I would have normally taken for granted.

To work as efficiently and accurately as possible I and fellow employees are required to take notes of callers national insurance numbers which are also referred to as NINO’s and their name At the end of each day this information would be securely destroyed via confidential waste procedures.

To mark this difficult yet interesting period of my life I decided to focus my energy on creating something iconic that I could reflect upon which would remind me of the emotions and challenges I have faced during this period. I have labelled this icon; A Day At The Office.

A Day At The Office

This piece of organised chaos not only stirs mixed emotions but also demonstrates that out of every situation weather it positive or negative that something visually or emotionally striking and beautiful can be created.

*Unfortunately my girlfriend whom I live with doesn’t share my passion for design and that’s why the iconic piece it situated on the wall of the coat room.

**Disclaimer – The names and details that can be found on the art piece are entirely fictional. The piece has been created to mimic the actual information which is captured during office hours.

Design ‘Vs’ Accessibility

There is no doubt that members of the design community are familiar with the ongoing debate regarding design and accessibility. It is often thought that the term “accessibility” is associated with a lack of features and poor visual design. Indeed, it could be said that such opinions, accompanied by a lack of promotion and awareness [...]
